Discontinuation of quotas for Bulgaria and Romania

SWITZERLAND - Discontinuation of quotas for Bulgaria and Romania

July 2019

The Protocol extending the free movement of persons to those coming from Bulgaria and Romania entered into force on 1 June 2009 and had a maximum transitional period of ten years. In 2017, quotas for residence permits (B permit EU/EFTA) for workers from Bulgaria and Romania were again introduced and extended in 2018.

Starting 1 June 2019, Bulgarian and Romanian nationals will benefit from full freedom of movement.  For permanent residence in Switzerland, they must either be in possession of a Swiss employment contract or sufficient financial funds.
