A moment that changed everything: Jeffery's journey at BDO Canada

Jeffery Rotar
Manager, Financial Reporting and Insights
BDO Canada (North Bay)

What first attracted Jeffery to BDO was the genuine warmth and professionalism of the people he met early on.  One of those first connections was with a manager from the local office, and that early interaction set the tone for what he would come to value most: a culture that feels supportive, professional, and community focused.

Over the past five years, what’s kept him there is the chance to learn through collaboration. He works alongside colleagues and clients who bring different perspectives, which keeps the work fresh and helps him keep going further in how he thinks, communicates, and solves problems.

Working in a smaller office (North Bay) has given me many opportunities to step forward, try new approaches, and take ownership of initiatives. I’ve consistently been encouraged by local leaders who trust me to explore solutions, bring forward ideas, and help shape our evolving BSO service line.

This support has allowed me to take the lead in developing coaching aids, enhancing standardized working papers, and contributing to high‑quality deliverables. The autonomy and encouragement I’ve received have helped me build confidence, think creatively, and continuously improve our client experience.

A moment that changed the direction of his career

A defining moment came at the very start of my career. On my first scheduled day, the province entered lockdown, and my position was unexpectedly put on hold. Despite this challenging situation, a manager from the office stayed connected with me throughout the summer, checking in regularly and keeping communication open.

Months later, that same person reached out with the opportunity to return. This became an opportunity that ultimately shaped my entire career path. Their commitment and support made an immense difference, and five years later, I still carry a deep appreciation for how they helped me start my journey with BDO.

Jeffery describes his development as something built day by day: an environment where curiosity is welcome, questions are encouraged, and learning happens in real time. He’s been supported by leaders who share knowledge openly and offer coaching when challenges come up, while still trusting him to explore ideas and take responsibility.

Advice he shares with others

If someone is considering a career at BDO, Jeffery’s advice is simple and practical:

My advice is to be open about your goals and have honest conversations with your People Leaders and mentors.

By sharing what you hope to achieve, you allow others to support you, guide you toward new experiences, and help you find roles that align with your interests and strengths. Being intentional and communicative about your aspirations can open doors you may not have realized were available.
