For him, the chance to be a pioneer was hard to resist.
Seventeen years later, James says what has kept him at BDO is simple: the firm has never stopped investing in him, not only as an employee, but as a person.
Over the years, his journey has taken him from trainee accountant to Senior Manager in Data and Technology. Along the way, he has led cross-functional teams, helped shape the firm’s strategy and moved across different areas of the business.
One of the most important parts of James’ journey has been the trust to take initiative. As the business landscape evolved, he helped lead the development of audit data analytics, tax analytics, technology risk assurance and advisory solutions, working with colleagues across Audit, Tax, Information Security and Business Development.
It was not always easy, but it became one of the experiences that shaped him most.
BDO Ghana has always been a place where people are encouraged to contribute, experiment and lead, no matter their title. He still remembers one of the Managing Partner’s philosophies: “Everything we do to build the firm is done by one of us.”
That mindset has stayed with him throughout his career.
The sense of belonging James describes also comes from the people who supported him through difficult moments. In the early days, when the firm was still finding its feet, there were long working hours and personal sacrifices. But through every challenge, there was always someone willing to listen, encourage him and help him see the bigger picture.
One conversation from his very first day has stayed with him ever since. The Managing Partner told him: “You either play now and pay later, or pay now and play later.” For James, that advice became a reminder that investing effort today creates opportunities tomorrow. It is also a lesson he now passes on to the people he mentors.
Today, James is still learning, still growing and still grateful. What motivates him most is knowing that his work has an impact on clients, colleagues and the next generation of leaders.
