Looking beyond the task: Cristian's journey at BDO Colombia

Cristian Andrés Vaca
BDO Interamericas (Colombia)
Supervisor, BSO

Cristian joined BDO with a clear sense of what he was looking for next. After working at smaller local firms, he wanted an opportunity to broaden his experience. Stepping into a larger firm felt like an opportunity to build skills that would shape his long-term path.

Over time, what’s kept him at BDO Colombia is less about one specific moment and more about what the day-to-day feels like: a culture that prioritizes people, supports wellbeing, and creates room to keep developing.

What keeps me at BDO Colombia is the organisational culture, one where people come first, where employee wellbeing matters, and where there is a real commitment to social‑impact initiatives.

A clear career path, ongoing learning opportunities, supportive leadership, and a strong benefits structure have allowed me to feel valued, challenged, and motivated to keep growing within the firm.

Cristian’s approach to work is shaped by one simple idea: it’s not enough to complete a task, what matters is the value it creates. That means taking time to understand context, looking ahead to risks and opportunities, and being willing to challenge how things are done when there’s a better way.

Thinking beyond means going further than simply completing tasks. It’s about focusing on how each deliverable can generate a positive impact for clients, the team, and the firm.

In practice, that mindset shows up in the details: asking the extra question, sharing knowledge across the team, and staying open to new challenges as part of a continuous-learning rhythm. It’s also how he stays focused on quality, because quality, for him, is tied to trust and to the outcomes clients rely on.

Cristian describes belonging as something that grew over time:

My sense of belonging at BDO has grown through support, shared experiences, and the examples of other professionals who have positively shaped my development. Their journeys have inspired me to plan and continue my own learning and development path within the firm.

BDO Colombia’s efforts to build a great place to work have increased motivation, improved productivity, and supported the firm’s sustained growth — reinforcing my commitment to contributing to its success.

Professional development has been a big part of his experience, particularly through structured learning opportunities that build both technical and strategic skills. He highlights initiatives such as the Centre for Excellence and Leadership, Advisors of the Future, and the Commercial Manager Academy, programs that helped him navigate challenges more confidently and reflect on purpose and long-term direction.

These experiences go beyond technical learning. They have shaped other areas of my life and helped me clarify the kind of professional and leader I want to be.

I’ve learned that sustained growth is built on consistency, personal leadership and a daily commitment to excellence, values that BDO not only encourages but genuinely lives within its organisational culture.
