Shaping the future of audit: Kim's journey at BDO Norway

Kim Gravseth Luong
Senior Manager, Audit Assurance and Technology
BDO Norway

Kim started his career at BDO Norway in Consulting. Early on, he worked on projects in collaboration with Audit & Assurance, which led him to transition into the Technology Risk Assurance function.

What stood out was the flexibility within BDO Norway, both in the variety of work and the ability to move across roles. This made it possible for him to explore different areas and shape his career based on his interests.

Kim also highlights the opportunity to contribute to building digital capabilities within BDO Norway, as the organisation continues to grow and evolve.

The variation and flexibility is unique for BDO. The opportunities for internal mobility and career transitions is a great way to pursue your passion and new ways of working.

The prospect of building the digital functions in BDO Norway is really motivating. We are on an exciting growth journey, meaning we get to innovate while having the power of a strong organization backing us.

Kim works within the Assurance and Technology space, where organisations are increasingly adopting new technologies while needing to make sure these are implemented in a secure and reliable way.

There has never been a bigger demand – and expectation by leadership and management to use cutting-edge technology.

But there is also a requirement that this new technology is rolled out in a safe manner that builds trust. Being able to guide companies and enterprises through this journey is really rewarding.

Challenging the norm in a changing industry

The auditing field is going through a major shift. The focus is no longer only on financials, but also on digital systems, processes, and access, making sure everything works as intended.

AI is also becoming a bigger part of this landscape, introducing both new opportunities and new responsibilities around control and safety.

Challenging the norm is what we do every day, but if I have to pick an example: In the auditing-sphere of things, we are in the biggest technologic transition ever.

An auditor delivers their stamp of approval on the financials. Now we are also auditing digital systems and processes, making sure they have access to what they should and don’t have insight into things these systems shouldn’t have.

As technology evolves, so does the way auditing is done. This means developing new approaches and working with technologies that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

When you assess how an organization uses technology, you also need to build and implement a proper auditing process. With new technology comes new ways of doing things. This demands a creative workflow.

It makes the work interesting and demands that you are at the forefront of new tech innovations.

Kim’s journey at BDO Norway has been defined by early responsibility and the opportunity to take on new challenges. He has been able to shape his role over time and explore different directions within the organisation.

I started out at BDO as an Associate, and now I’m a Senior Manager. When working at BDO, you are given responsibility early on. If you want, there is absolutely room to grow fast and take on new challenges.

I still remember meeting my first client on Day 3 of my BDO career. That was symbolic of the rocket ship I’ve been part of career-wise. Senior management is genuinely interested in the new perspectives and experiences that new hires bring to the table.

Most importantly: BDO allows you to shape your own role, exploring your own pathway.
