Finding focus at full speed: Andrea's journey at BDO Norway

Andrea Munkhaugen
Senior Associate, Consulting
BDO Norway

She thrives in a fast-paced environment, both at work and on the racetrack. As an advisor in BDO Consulting, Andrea combines structure and analytical thinking with a hobby where speed and family time take center stage.

In her day-to-day role, Andrea helps BDO’s clients with CFO support services. In her spare time, track driving is her greatest passion.

She releases the clutch and rolls onto the track. Her helmet is firmly in place, and her eyes are fixed far ahead. For a few intense minutes, everything revolves around corners, timing, and speed.

But first, let’s rewind to the starting line and get to know the person behind the wheel.

Andrea holds a Master’s degree in Business and Economics from BI and NTNU in Trondheim (Norwegian city) and works in BDO Consulting in Trondheim. There, she has found a work environment that suits both her pace and personality.

Her career at BDO began in 2021 when she joined the accounting division as a part-time employee. After three years, she moved into BDO Consulting, where she has spent the past year and a half in the CFO Advisory department. The team provides support services for CFOs, including financial modelling, annual reports, financial statements, forecasting, and interim CFO services.

I work on the financial side of year-end reporting and support audit processes, but I also spend time on-site with clients. It’s exciting to be close to day-to-day operations and actively involved. One of the best things about BDO is the variety.

She describes herself as a social person who likes to stay busy. That is one of the reasons she enjoys working in a large organization with multiple areas of expertise under one roof.

I work in a multidisciplinary professional environment, with everyone from auditors and lawyers to technology experts and sustainability advisors. It’s incredibly rewarding to collaborate with so many talented people across different fields and deliver projects together.

A hobby that started at home

Coincidentally, the same year she joined BDO, she also picked up a new hobby: sports car track driving. She laughs at the suggestion that there might be a connection between her job and her hobby.

“It was completely accidental. During the pandemic, it became more natural to travel within Norway, and my sister and I finally managed to convince our dad to take us along.”

She and her sister inherited their interest in cars from their father. The first time she drove on a racetrack herself was five years ago in Mo i Rana (Norwegian city).

It’s a track we use a lot. We’ve also been to Rudskogen (Norwegian town) in Østfold and the Nürburgring in Germany, as well as ice-track driving at Norefjell and Hjerkinn.

It’s something my sister and I do together with our dad, so it’s a slightly unusual but very enjoyable family hobby.

Although Trondheim has relatively few racetracks, the local motorsport community is quite large.

Track driving is organized in 20-minute sessions, during which drivers complete as many laps as possible. She explains that it is purely a hobby. She does not compete in races, so above all, the challenge is against herself.

Working with local clients

Risk is also part of her daily work, although in a very different sense. Her focus is on helping clients minimize risk, particularly in the area of sustainability. Andrea has increasingly specialized in this field and spends much of her time working with sustainability reporting.

Right now, we’re helping develop a sustainability strategy for a local real estate company, and I’m heavily involved in research and insights work. I’m also participating in several AI initiatives, which are incredibly exciting.

Real estate and construction are among the largest industries in the Trondheim region, and BDO has many clients within these sectors.

Personally, I find the real estate and construction industries very interesting, so it’s both enjoyable and educational to have the opportunity to work with several significant players in these sectors.

On the racetrack, success depends on reading situations quickly, trusting your judgment, and making adjustments along the way. In her professional life, she does much the same, only in a different context and with different responsibilities. The common denominator is that when the pace is high, her focus sharpens, and that is exactly where she thrives the most.
